Solid Drilling is a deep hole drilling process used when only one operation is desired to obtain the required bore diameter. Solid Drilling tools remove all the material from the bore in just one pass. Additionally due to the quality of the bore finish the majority of operations require no additional machining to 'clean up' the bore. Solid Drilling is ideal for bore diameters ranging from 0.437" to 10.500" in diameter assuming the drilling machine has enough power.
Our Unidex indexable solid drilling tools are our most popular product since they can be used to replace conventional drills such as spade drills, twist drills and gun drills. Our solid drilling tools may be used with either the single tube (BTA/STS) or double tube deep hole drilling systems.
American Heller Corporation has a standard line of indexable solid drilling tools for common drilling applications. However, we also sell an alternate style BTA Heller drill as well as brazed drills.

Consider these unique advantages of American Heller's BTA Unidex Indexable Solid Drilling Tools.
- Tools produced to an accuracy of ±.0005" on diameter resulting in closer tolerance holes and accurate replacement of inserts.
- Drill up to 100 times the tool diameter with runout as little as .001" per foot.
- No removal of tool during drilling operations to qualify cutter or pads. Less down time means higher productivity to you.
- Inserts with factory ground circle lands insure better hole finish and closer I.D. tolerances in deep holes. Hole tolerance of ±.001" I.D. obtainable.
- Carbide inserts in stock either coated or uncoated for drilling alloy steels, cast iron, stainless steels and space age metals.
- All inserts and guide pads are factroy precision ground to American Heller's close tolerances, which eliminates all grinding in your plant.
- All guide pads are reversible for double the life.
- Inserts and carbide pads are interchangeable with other/similar BTA Indexable Drilling Tools.
Note: Hole tolerances, concentricity, surface finish and runout will be affected by a number of factors including machine condition, alignment, drilling bar straightness, bushing size, etc.

General Information
American Heller's solid drilling tools can be designed to use either the BTA/STS or DTS drilling systems. For more information on the differences between the BTA/STS and DTS systems please refer to our Drilling Information Page . Our solid drilling tools use indexable spare parts that are interchangeable with our other deep hole drilling products. Additionally our solid drilling tools may be threaded for our standard internal thread, a four-start OD thread or a customer supplied thread. The figure below illustrates a BTA/STS style solid drilling tool where coolant and chip removal is through the ID of the drilling bar.
