BTA Skiving and Burnishing Tools
A faster method to produce hydraulic cylinders using the BTA or other single tube deep hole drilling systems than conventional honing. Typical results are a better quality cylinder in 1/10th the time.
Skiving
Skiving is a process used for rapid stock removal when close diameter and roundness to clearance are required. Skiving can produce surface finishes of 60 to 125 micro-inches CLA. The depth of cut is usually 0.002 - 0.040 inch per side. Skiving also produces optimal peak and valley patters for subsequent roller burnishing.

Roller Burnishing
Pressure from the rollers causes material to flow from the "peaks" into the "valleys". The burnishing process produces a more condensed and refined surface finish which reduces seal friction and surface porosity. Reactive substances and contaminants are less likely to attach to and corrode a burnished metal surface.

Skive-Bur-Izing
Here the skiving and roller burnishing tools are combined for faster production and less material handling time. Skiv-bur-izing tools are available in push-pull and one-direction styles. Push-pull tools skive on the push stroke and burnish on the pull stroke while one-direction tools skive and burnish on the push stroke resulting in faster processing than push-pull tools.

The Advantages of Skiv-Bur-Izing.
- Tool sizes starting at 1.500" diameter. Each tool size has a finite diameter adjustment of approx. 0.125 - 0.250 inches.
- A floating cutter cartridge that automatically adjusts to the internal contour of the cylinder to correct out-of-roundness without producing wall distortion or variations in wall thickness.
- Bore diameter and roundness tolerances can be held to 0.0005 inch and a surface finish of 6-12 micro-inches is consistently maintained.
- Faster processing time than honing. Reducing machining time (60-90%) results in reduced machining costs.
- Less expensive than honing by 60-75%
- Harder surface finish by up to 10 points Rc.
- Superior surface finish resists corrosion.
- A Skiv-bur-ized finish of 12 micro-inch provides better seal life than a honed finish of 4 micro-inches.

Where to use BTA Skiv-Bur-Izing Tools.
BTA skiving and burnishing tools can be used with single tube deep hole drilling systems such as the BTA system. A pressure head is used to force coolant to the cutting edge in order to flush the chips forward and out of the cylinder as well as cool the cutting edge. The following figure illustrates a typical machine for skive-bur-izing cylindrical tubes. On this machine the workpiece is held stationary and is supported between two conical reception plates -- one located on the oil pressure head and one at the counter support.
