BTA Heller
Pull boring tools have some advantages and disadvantages when compared with push style tools. The main advantage is excellent hole straightness. Since the tool is being pulled through the workpiece, there is less tendency for the boring bar to bend or be deflected. The main disadvantage is that the pre-bore must pass through the entire workpiece and a Lantern must be used to seal the workpiece at the end where the pull boring tool enters the workpiece. This seal is required in order to contain the coolant in the workpiece so it may flush the chips from the bore. The figure below illustrates a BTA/STS pull bore tool in which the chip exhaust is through the ID of the boring bar.
